Whipped Coconut Oil Lotion

Whipped-Coconut-Oil.jpg

Ever since moving to cold, northern Michigan, my skin has become much drier than before. Another downside to this cold weather is my coconut oil is as hard as a rock, which makes it really difficult to deal with issue #1. Recently, I started looking for a solution, but it was a little more difficult to find an answer on the internet than I imaged. So, I thought I would share what worked for me.

Let's rewind a couple years. I had just started using coconut oil if my skin got extremely dry thanks to Pinterest. When we live down state, this would only happen during the coldest weeks of winter. So, I would put some oil on my legs and maybe my arms. Then, within a few days of doing this, I was good as new.

Now that we live up north, every week seems like the coldest week of winter, and my skin has been struggling. I was also having issues with my coconut oil getting too cold. When this happened, it was practically impossible to get out of the jar. And yes, I know that I could run it under warm water, but I was constantly forgetting to do this while I was showering. Then, I'd be super cold, wrapped up in my towel after taking a shower, and trying to scrape shavings of this rock-hard coconut oil out of the jar with my fingernails... not my best moment.

I thought there had to be an easier way to use coconut oil in the winter, so I started scouring the internet for answers. Sadly, all I found were recipes to make body butters by whipping shea butter, coconut oil, and essential oils together. I didn't have any of these other ingredients, and I wasn't about to start running all over town looking for them. Ain't no body got time for 'dat!

That's when I had the idea... Maybe I could just whip the coconut oil. I was hoping that by adding air to it, it would be easier to scoop out of the jar with my hands. I got out a mixing bowl, plopped in my hard-as-a-rock coconut oil*, and used my handy dandy Kitchen-Aid hand mixer for a couple minutes. Presto, change-o! It worked!

I've been using the whipped coconut oil for a week now, and it's amazing! The oil melts after you rub a dollop of it between your hands for a few seconds, and spreads very easily. I've even gotten my husband to use it a few times when his face looks really dry, and even he likes it!

Once the oil absorbs into your skin and the "buttery" feeling (that's what Jason calls it) is gone, your skin feels oh so smooth. Plus, you smell like a Piña Colada, which helps me pretend I'm on a warm, tropical beach somewhere far, far away.

*Make sure you're using the coconut oil in it's solid state. Don't heat it up, and liquify it when you go to whip it.

honest lotion Face + Body Lotion loved this product! It was exactly what my face needed for a moisturizer, and it's fragrance free! This product is perfect for dry winter skin, anywhere on your body (face, hands, elbows, kness, feet, etc.). It's a very light, and non-greasy formula that really does the job. Honestly, if you're not sure if you want to give this free trial a go, I would recommend doing it just for this product. It's amazing!

_dsc0142-1Hand Soap I mean... it's hand soap. I like the lavender smell. It's nice, but not super overpowering. It got gook off my hands when I needed it to. It does what hand soap is should do. I do still have this half-empty container sitting in our main floor bathroom a few months after getting the trial, because it's basically the same as the hand soap we have in the dispenser. I do like the fact that it's advertised to not have any harsh chemicals... but in the end it's still a hand soap that costs $5 for 11.5 fluid ounces.

_dsc0143-1Shampoo + Body Wash To be honest, I was little upset when I realized this was 'orange' scented. If you know me, you know I hate oranges. The taste and the smell. Yuck! BUT I was pleasantly surprised, because their "Sweet Orange Vanilla" scent is actually like an orange creamscile, or orange push-pop. So to me that's a million times better than straight orange.

So, onto the product's performance. I thought it worked well as a shampoo and body wash. Nothing that was amazingly spectacular or mind blowing, but it worked. I did use my normal conditioner with this, and my hair styled the same as before. My skin wasn't overly dry, and it didn't leave a filmy feeling either. For me, this isn't something I would buy for everyday use, since the price tag is a little high. BUT! It's the perfect travel bag product, because it's one less bottle I would have to pack. For that reason, I'll probably buy one for me and one for the hubby.

_dsc0144-1Multi-Surface Cleaner I loved this product. In comparison to the Scrubbing Bubbles Heavy Duty All Purpose Cleaner, this stuff held its own. I had to use a little more elbow grease to get my oven cleaned after splattering spaghetti sauce on it, but it did the job. It also did a great  job on my wood surfaces when I dusted with it. All of these surfaces were left shiny and clean like they were brand new.

Also, I really loved the light, fresh white grapefruit scent, too. At first, I felt like my house didn't smell clean because it wasn't like the typical, over-powering lemon scent in most household cleaners. However, after using this for a week and going back to the Scrubbing Bubbles, I hated how strong that product was. This is one product I will definitely buy!

_dsc0145-1Organic Healing Balm Out of all the items in the box, this one is my least favorite. It did a really great job moisturizing and soothing my very dry, cracked cuticles. However, the smell of the product is a little too...uh... earthy for me. When I initially opened the container I thought it was very skunky. After using the product, it became more subdued but it's definitely not fruity or flowery. This smell definitely makes me think twice about reaching for this product, and I have been using their Face + Body Lotion over this one. At the end of the day, if I need to treat extremely dry skin, then I'll reach for my jar of coconut oil... it definitely smells better.
