Fall

Must Have Fall Skincare Products

Fall ends up being a strange time for my skin. It starts to dry out more, and acne tends to creep up because of it. This means I have to mix up my skincare routine to keep up with these changes in my skin. Here are a few products that I love to use this time of year.

Fall Fashion Favorites

I love this time of year. It's chilly enough you want to wear jeans, flannels and chunky sweaters, but not so cold you need a big, puffy coat that hides your entire outfit. This fall there are definitely some things I'm leaning more toward than others.

Happy Plaidurday!

Happy Plaidurday!

When I lived in Lansing, one of the advertising agencies started a fall holiday called Plaidurday. It slowly grew, and the other agencies took part - including the one I worked at. Now, some bigger brands celebrate it! And even though I haven't worked there in a hot minute, I still like celebrating this fun, light-hearted holiday.

Happy first day of fall! One thing I adore about Michigan - especially Northern Michigan - is being able to watch the leaves change. It's an eye opening reminder that the year is coming to an end, and the holiday season is right around the corner. It makes me think of what I need to do to accomplish my goals for this year.

This time of year definitely lights a fire under my butt. I work a little harder. It's when I reassess where I am, and use more force to push toward what I want to be. Fall is a no excuses season for me. It's the time to turn over a new leaf.

Now that summer is over, life is going to get a little more hectic. Halloween and hunting season will be here in no time. Then, we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas. Before you know it, 2018 will be here. So, even though I work harder to reach my goals, I also make sure to enjoy 2017 for what it was and what's to come. Ah... I love fall!

Fall Makeup Tutorial - Full Lashes and Bold Lips

Bold LipsOne of my favorite fall beauty trends is the super easy yet sophisticated look with natural eyeshadow, long and voluminous lashes and a bold lip color. I particularly love plumy and cranberry lip colors for fall, and sometimes I'll mix the two colors together to get a more dimensional look. In this video tutorial you will see how I do it. The video tutorial and list of products are below!

My Go-To Makeup for Fall 2014 - EYES

All ProductsWelcome back to part 2 of my go-to fall 2014 makeup trilogy. If you haven't read part 1 about face products, click here. If you have read it or only care about the eye products continue on...

New York Color (NYC) Brow Kit in Brunette

_DSC1398I bought this little nugget a few months go, and I love it. Before I was using an eyeshadow in a Sephora palette and the colored eyebrow was from ELF, but I just wasn't happy with them. All I wanted was the eyeshadow in a more portable container like the ELF eyebrow wax. Beauty gurus online have said good things about this product. So, I thought a product that was under $5 was worth a shot, and I haven't looked back. This is great because it's not so pigmented that your eyebrows don't belong to your face, and it's easy to build up.

To apply this product I use my pinky to place a small amount of the clear wax on my arch and tail. Then I apple the brown powder using small strokes with a narrow angled brush. Finally, I use an eyebrow brush and quickly go over my brows to get the hairs to lay how I would like and to disperse any thick patches of product.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Just Beige

_DSC1399I'm going to start of by saying I love all the Maybelline Color Tattoos I own (see the other three colors and an in-depth review here). However I have been leaning toward this particular color. It's a great matte shadow base and primer that is perfect for fair-skinned people. Sadly, I haven't seen it in stores for a few months so this was most likely limited edition. I love the color tattoos because they are affordable, but if you really need a matte, skin-toned shadow base you can try MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre. It's definitely a pricier alternative, but I have heard great things about this product, too.

To apply this product, I place my ring finger into the pot and rub it in a circular motion for a few seconds. Picking up the product this way helps warm up the product and make it easier to apply to your eyelid. Then I apply this from my lash line to my brow bone, and go over it a few times to make sure it's blended easily.

I learned a super helpful tip when storing this product so it won't dry out: Store it with the black lid on the bottom. This makes it so the moisture in the product is where you are putting your finger when you use the product, and not at the bottom of the pot. SO HELPFUL! I wish I would have stored these like this all along...

Maybelline The Rocket Volumn' Express Waterproof Mascara in Very Black

_DSC1395Best. Drugstore. Mascara! I absolutely love this product. It doesn't flake or smear all over your face, it keeps your lashes curled and voluminous, it's clump free, and it's from the drugstore! My favorite mascara of all time is Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes!, but this by far my favorite drug store one. It's color is so dark and your lashes won't look like a spider if you apply two coats. I have used the regular formulation of this product, but the waterproof one keeps my stick-straight lashes curled all day long.

I apply this mascara in a pretty basic way... First I curl my lashes. Then I put the brush covered with product at the base of my top lashes and wiggle the brush as I go toward the end of the lash, and go over all of my lashes. Also, I use the left over product to apply a light coat on my lower lashes. If I feel like I didn't get enough va-voom on the first coat, I apply a second to my top lashes.

Wet n Wild ColorIcon Eyeliner in White

_DSC1400This last product is my 8 hours of sleep in a pencil. When you put this on your waterline, it makes you look awake and ready to take on the day. As I have praised over and over, Wet n Wild products are super pigmented and super affordable. If you've never tried a white eyeliner pencil, you should give this a try because you can get it for a few dollars (I think I paid $1.50) and it will last FOREVER.

To apply this, I pull my lower water-line away from my eyeball, and run the pencil over it a couple of times until the skin is lighter. That's it. It's even easier than how I apply mascara and it will make you look like you got a great night's sleep (even though you didn't).

What products are you loving this fall?

Lots of love!

My Go-To Makeup for Fall 2014 - FACE

_DSC1368Over the past weeks I've noticed myself gravitating toward specific products every morning when I get ready for work. Although I don't do my make-up the same everyday, I can almost guarantee I'm using these products for 95% of my fall looks. So... this post would be very long if I put all the products in one, so I split it into three categories: Face, Eyes, and Lips. I'll start with my favorite face products, and how I apply each one.

Bare Minerals Matte Foundation in Fairly Light

_DSC1362This is by far my favorite powder/mineral foundation. It's light-weight, easy to apply, lasts all day, and keeps my T-zone from getting shiny. Plus one container has lasted months! Keep in mind that this is a very light-coverage foundation, so I recommend applying concealer before this foundation to cover any acne or dark spots. I love using light-coverage foundations for everyday, because it's so easy to apply, there's minimal touch-ups, and my freckles still show.

To apply this product I shake a little into the lid, and swirl a loose powder kabuki brush into the product. Then I use small circular motions to apply it to my face. Normally I start with my cheeks to help blend the powder I used to set my under eye concealer, get more product to apply to my forehead, and a little more to cover my nose and chin. Super easy and quick.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Fair

_DSC1366Yet another wonderful product! This concealer is super easy to apply, and doesn't cake up when I use it on my under-eye area. I searched for what felt like forever to find a drug-store concealer that would cover my purple under-eye circles without creasing or caking. Then I found this little gem. It's a light and moisturizing formula that has some serious coverage power. The color fair is a little light for me, but the salmon undertones do wonders for my dark-circles and helps brighten my eye area.

I apply this product 2 ways.

  1. I create a c-shape around the tear-duct area and place a small line under my bottom lash line across the edge of my eyeshadow (I use concealer to clean up the outer edge of my eyeshadow). I then blend the product in by patting my ring finger around the area with concealer. This is perfect for everyday wear, and to help brighten your eyes and cover dark circles.
  2. I create a triangle made of a series of lines starting with one by my tear-duct down to the corner of my nose and ending with one by eye's outer-corner over to the end of my eyebrow tail. I then blend these lines together by patting the product around with my ring finger. This is what I do for special occasions, and when I'm wearing a foundation with more coverage. It is a great way to add dimension to your face, and brighten you under eye area as well as your cheekbones.

Wet n Wild Blush in Heather Silk

_DSC1365If you do not own a Wet n Wild blush, shame on you. The formulations are so pigmented that you need only a little product to get a perfect flush to your cheeks. One pan of the product will last you FOREVER! Plus they're so inexpensive that there's no excuses for why you don't own these blushes. I don't think you could go wrong with any of their colors. I've found myself reaching for the color Heather Silk the past month, which is a lovely blue-toned pink.

To apply this product I pat (not swirl) a small, fluffy blush brush in the pan 2-4 times. Then I use a small circular motion starting near the apples of my cheeks and moving toward the top of my ear. After I use the majority of the product on my brush, I go over my cheeks once or twice to blend the product. Depending on how much product you get the first go around, you may have to do this application a 2nd time. In the end, it's a lot easier to add more blush then try to blend out too much (am I right, or am I right?!).
